Science in Iran

We're all familiar with teh ID debate that's been wasting everyones time in the US recently (45% of the US population believe the Earth is only 6000 years old - get a grip!) and we're well aware that the battle has been quite heated. But did you ever give a thought to how similar issues are handled in Islamic countries?

Well, not surprisingly, where the clerics hold all the cards scientific discovery can be a dangerous thing. Check out this article from sciencemag.org.

It's not all bad news, despite the stories of arrests and imprisonment. It appears that the need for modern science has been enough to sway even the clerics when it comes to stem cell research and genetics and the scientists may well be the right people to encourage further change.
