My son in trouble at school for atheism

My 13 year old son has another issue at school related to religion. Previously he has had minor trouble when he has pointed out the flaws in his teachers thinking and the nonsense she tries to teach to the rest of the class. One of the classics was when his teacher tried to teach the class that the more people that think something is right then the more likely it is that it is true. He pointed out that most people thought the world was flat and that they were all wrong. He pointed out that most people thought the earth was the centre of the solar system and that they were all wrong. He also pointed out, to further challenge his Christian teacher's illogic that most people on the planet are not Christians and so by her own reasoning she was wrong. I am proud of him for this. His teacher was less impressed.

He's also had small issues for refusing to pray, refusing to write prayers, refusing to read prayers, refusing to take part in religious services and (and this is my favourite, not only because it is so absurd but because the same thing happened to me) asking questions!

Today, in his religious studies class he was given the task of inventing a religion. He was told to design the symbols, the clothes, the rituals, the prayers and all the other trappings of a religion.

He refused.

He told his teacher that he doesn't agree with religion and will not spend his time inventing something to which he is opposed. I absolutely support him in his decision.

Making children design a religion is obscenely stupid whichever way you look at it. It's just another angle at trying to get kids interested in the ridiculous and by encouraging their involvement make them more accepting of the subject. It's another theist trick for young minds and I'm personally appalled at the way they will try to weasel their nonsense into the minds of children whilst society at large sits back and applauds this wicked form of child abuse. What would the reaction of parents be if their children were asked to invent a form of discrimination? How would parents react if their children were commanded to invent their own form of dictatorship? How about their own form of slavery?

My son refused to take part. His teacher, since my son still remains her best pupil for purely academic reasons, let it go only saying that he should think about his decision and they will pick up the subject tomorrow. In other words, go and think about what an awful thing you've done. She should be careful what she wishes for.

He asked me what I thought about it all so I told him that he had my full support. He asked me what he could do if this resulted in some disciplinary action against him, which it probably will. So I told him "Ask her if she would discipline a Muslim child who considered her request blasphemy and also refused to take part". There are Muslim children in his class and I can imagine this striking a nerve – not least because I suspect she will immediately be nervous of offending the parents of these children. She will especially feel those nerves start to tingle if he asks her this in front of the rest of the class. She does not even need to give her answer because her answer is obvious. She would excuse them from the task.

So why is it ok to excuse someone from an idiot activity at school based solely on the idiot beliefs of their parents whilst it is not immediately obvious to her that it is unacceptable to victimise a child for having the character to stand by his own convictions arrived at through reason?

My son is no idiot and he is very well educated. He and I talk a great deal about science, mathematics, critical thinking, and yes, religion. He does share my opinions on religion just as a Christian child likely shares their Christian parent's beliefs. The difference here is that he knows why he thinks as he thinks. He has not learned dogma. He has learned to question. He has learned enough of the holes in what he is being nudged to accept that it is fair to say that he is more an atheist than any child is a Christian because he actually understands why – as I think is apparent by the challenges he thought of and presented himself when his teacher tried to teach him the nonsense that what most people believe is probably right.

My son reminds me of myself when I was younger. My mother was a Christian and encouraged me to be the same. My father was and remains an atheist, but he never even spoke to me on the subject until I was in my late teens and even then it was only to tell me that I was too hard on religion and that whilst it is obviously dribble it is nice dribble that does more good than harm and that I should leave it alone. In further discussions we have had he has since changed his mind. He now considers religion to be an unpleasant infection of the human race for which we should urgently find a cure.

But, I was brought up by a Christian mother in a school where we were made to pray (I refused). I was even sent to Sunday school for a short period before I was expelled (for asking questions). I had my own thoughts and there was no room in them for a god or a saviour or ritual or prayer. My son really is just the same – except for the fact that he has a father who will back him up 100% in his refusal to be forced into fairy tale idiocy that he finds insultingly stupid and absurd. He objects without my interference, just as I did when the only interference I received was in favour of believing the obviously false.

Good for him.

At the end of our conversation he asked if I would write him something about the likely non-existence of an historical Jesus Christ that he could use to open a discussion with his teacher. I agreed so long as he would learn from it, do his own further research and then write his own paper to take to his teacher. He agreed to this. So I will now get to work and write a case against Christ. I will post what I end up writing here.

If it's worth writing at all it is worth writing thoroughly – so within a week or two please expect a vicious and factual attack against the big man himself.

Jesus, you're going down bitch! It must be so. My son is going to school to tell his teacher "My dad will kick the shit out of your god" and I'm going to make sure he's right :)

If you enjoyed this article please feel free to digg it down below.

Actually, your son should have participated. He should have mocked Christianity with something similar to the Flying Spaghetti Monster. To show how stupid religion really is.

As an atheist, why would you send your son to a school with a religious studies class?

Something here does not add up.

Your son needs to get better examples. It is a bit of a myth that people thought the world was flat (well, they did, but beliefs like that were mostly gone by the first century, according to the Wikipedia entry on "Flat Earth), and the centre of the solar system is just an arbitrary reference point that happens to be simpler to define as being the most massive object in the solar system. The "Christianity is a minority" argument is brilliant, though.

Why is your son in a religous school?

chooseDoubt said...

My son doesn't go to a religious school but religious studies is a compulsory part of the national curriculum.

Anonymous said...

What national curriculum are you referring to? Still smells like BS to me. There are plenty of US schools where religious studies ARE NOT req'd.

BDE

chooseDoubt said...

And plenty of European schools where it is.

Anonymous said...

So your son is in a European school? Which country?

Your reluctance to provide any details leads me to believe the entire post is a figment of your deranged mind. Why would you put your son in a school with religious studies when you claim to be a strident atheist? There are plenty of schools in Europe which have no religious studies portion of the curriculum.

Quite the conspiracy theorist aren’t you?

I currently live in Spain. I've said that many times on many blogs. Religious studies are nationally compulsory until 14 years old, not just in my Children's school but in all of them.

Anonymous said...

CD;

Where do you see the conspiracy? I certainly don't see a conspiracy (btw you should look up what conspiracy means as you don't seem to be able to use the term correctly). What I see is someone with an agenda willing to make up stories to support said agenda.

I don't follow your postings on other blogs and I asked you a direct question which you avoided answering the first time around (what national curriculum) so it certainly appeared you were not providing full disclosure.

Your entire post still sounds like BS to me which is not surprising given your past history of lies, deceit and bullshit.

On a side note I congratulate you for choosing Spain to reside in (if you truly do). It is a lovely country.

BDE

chooseDoubt said...

BDE, I'm not really sure that full disclosure is particularly relevant or required for a personal anecdote but I take your point on board.

Think whatever you want to think about this post and any other. It's your choice.

Yes, Spain is a lovely country in many ways.

bde - in the UK religious education is part of the national curriculum until age 15. It is a shame you have jumped to so many conclusions in your desire to demonstrate choosedoubt has an "agenda."

This anecdote pretty much identically matches my own childhood, so it certainly does not sound like BS.

One important issue (in my mind) is that if you feel choosedoubt has a "history of lies, deceit and bullshit" why do you continue to read the blog?

Anonymous said...

tas;

I like to call out Choosedoubt for the BS artist he is. Anybody who sets up a website claiming to promote atheism but who uses that as an excuse to attack one particular religion does real atheists a dis-service.

In this particular case, I just don't buy that he would send his kid to a school with a religious studies element.

Must all UK schools have a religious studies element to their curriculum?

BDE

Unknown said...

BDE,

Yes. Religious Education is a fundamental part of the UK national curriculum. Recently it has broadened its coverage to include non-Abrahamic religions, but certainly when I was at school you learned a bit about Judaism and a lot about Christianity.

Things are changing in the UK, but we are one of the more secular nations in Europe.

As for an Atheist blog attacking one particular religion, what is the problem with that? Would you demand his blog spent equal time explaining why the Finnish creation myths are false, the logical flaws in Zoroastrianism, the inconsistencies in Mitraism? (and so on).

Surly an atheist blog will be about the things they experience and the situations they have to live with on a day to day basis. An atheist living in a Christian country has Christianity thrown at them almost daily, so it is more than probable that the Atheist will use Christianity as the example.

Generally speaking, the arguments against one religion apply equally against others and most atheists are more than capable of mentally substituting each other religion.

Can I assume, from this, you are Christian or would that be a mistake on my behalf? From personal experience I have found followers of each religion are happy for the other religions to come under ridicule but feel amazingly put out if it is their own.

I'm an atheist. CD uses this blog to attack Islam. I'm no fan of Islam but the tripe he posts here is ridiculous. Just look at the images etc on the sidebars (Islamic terror attacks since 9/11, the image of the smoking twin towers at the upper left). This site is a thinly veiled anti-Muslim site masquerading as an atheist site.

BDE

chooseDoubt said...

BDE,

You seem to have decided for yourself what it is I'm trying to do.

Since you've got it wrong I shall clarify for you.

This site is not a thinly veiled anti-Muslim site. It is an absolutely unveiled (I do like that you chose the veiled comparison), out in the open, happy to admit it, anti-Islam site. It's also an anti-Christianity site and anti-“Insert any religion here” site. That's the whole point.

I chose to use the Twin Towers image because it is the most recent and commonly recognisable real world icon of the destruction of religious madness. Since I am anti-religion it makes sense to me to associate religion with the incredible damage it does, based on absolutely no evidence at all. I fail to see why you have a problem with that. I also fail to care – you are not my editor.

But since you get so upset about me attacking Islam (since you are a Muslim apologist as I well know from my first encounter with you) why don't you head over here and see the balance of me commenting on Christianity?

http://thepoint.breakpoint.org/2007/02/what_has_jesus_.html

I've done similar on quite a few Christian sites.

Out of the posts currently on my blog home page only one is about Muslims and that is from a direct and personal experience of me being AGGRESSIVELY HARRASSED in a BAR (ALCOHOL DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT) by a MUSLIM who was drinking ALCOHOL because he didn't like me saying in a private conversation to others that another Muslim (also drinking alcohol and a willing participant in the conversation) was hypocritical for saying that no one is allowed to insult religion whilst he called Christianity bullshit. I fail to see that I'm on the war path to persecute Muslims. And I suppose my post on the Pan Aryan Alliance recently also supports your theory that I'm racist?

Don't actually bother to answer any of these questions. I'm not really interested in what you have to say.

I've said in the past and I'll say it again. I have nothing at all against Muslim people. I have everything against Islam. If you subtract Muslim from Muslim Individual you are left with an Individual and that's as deep as it goes. Islam is the most vile and barbaric practicing religion of our time and I make absolutely no apology or alternative justification for my opposition to it. Islam itself has provided every necessary justification in the Qur'an.

What I find very curious is the way that you only ever defend Islam and have never had anything bad to say about it and have previously described Palestinians suicide bombing pizza restaurants and kids on busses as legitimate resistance.

I'm not suggesting anything at all by this. I'm just saying I find you curious - but not curious enough to bother with anymore.

Before you respond I'll forewarn you that I have absolutely no intention of wasting my time getting drawn into a discussion with you. Leave any comments you like, they won't be deleted, but I have far better things to do than reply.

Where do I defend Islam?

I don't. Nice try you sleazy BS artist.

What I defend is the right of all people to be treated equally; something you seem to have a problem with.

The Palestinians have been wronged by the west and by Israel. This is not a religious issue but rather a case of colonialism. You defend Israel in all its barbarity. I defend the rights of all people to be treated equally.

That is where we differ. I am a humanist while you are a bigot.

If you had any intellectual honesty you would be able to deal with this reality and try and overcome it but you don't.

BDE,

First off, sorry for my assumption that you were a Christian. I will endeavour to avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

I can not honestly say I have noticed a specific "anti-Islam" theme here (for example the Crucifix and the face of "Jesus" on the right), but that may be simply a result of my own choice in what I read.

I do feel that almost all the posts I have read here have been "anti-Christianity" which is why I jumped to my previous conclusion. As I have yet to read any posts which are not on the first page, I have only seen 1 which is anti-Islam, the other anti-Religion ones are certainly anti-Christianity.

Despite all this, the majority of my previous comments still remain. A blog which is "anti-religion" is going to be anti-Islam. If it is predominantly anti-Islam, what is the problem with that? Do you feel an atheist blog has to provide an even share over the abuse each religion is subjected to?

My blog has nearly 50 anti-Christianity posts for each anti-Islam posts (and has no anti-Jewish posts), it even has a sort of pro-Buddhist post, but it is certainly an atheists blog.

If Choosedoubt was trying to subtly push a Christian blog as an Atheist one, I would see your point.

As it stands, what does it matter if Islam gets more than its fair share of abuse? All the believers of each faith are crackpots. Why should one group be given special consideration over others?

Anonymous said...

tas;

You miss my point entirely. This blog is not about what it claims to be about (atheism) but is rather an anti-Islam blog masquerading as an atheist blog. CD uses the veneer of atheism to try and hide his bigottry and bias against Muslims and Islam.

Notice the blogroll includes "thisongoingwar" blogspot which is a blog run by two bigot Israeli Jews (where is CD's condemnation of Judaism!?) and the even more overtly hate filled anti-Muslim blog "The Study of Revenge".

BDE

chooseDoubt said...

BDE,

What you don't seem to understand is that I am openly anti-Islam and I openly admit that Islam is the worst of the mainstream religions. ThisOngoingWar is run by a Jewish couple who lost their child to a suicide attack on a restaurant (sorry, an act of legitimate resistence as you like to call it). Bigots? You haven't got a clue, have you?

The Study of Revenge is a blog on which a great many posters make very interesting comments against Islam. The lucid and hard hitting works of D.T.Devareaux have sparked some very interesting conversation. Should I apologise to you for linking there? NO - it is you that is the bigot. You add nothing valuable to the conversation and yet persist in criticism and baseless accusations. If you read The Study of Revenge regularly you will see that on occasion I have disagreed with all of them from time to time. I don't buy the same brand of nationalistic, christian soap that many of them want to wash the world clean with. But I do find the conversations intersting and I remind you that you are not my editor and that I may link to whomsoever I wish without your approval.

But all of this is besides the point. I am absolutely openly anti-Islam. I am more anti-Islam than I am anti-Christianity or any other religion because Islam is the biggest and most immediate religious threat there currently is. I don't hide it. I won't apologise for it, and you won't understand it. That's very definitely your problem and not mine.

Now, you can debate Tas about that all you like. It won't change a thing. I'll post what I want and I'll give prominence to what I want.

Anonymous said...

CD;

Suicide attacks within Israel proper are not legit resistance by definition but they are certainly understandable acts of violence that Israel has brought upon its own citizens by its intransigence and unwillingness to deal in good faith with the Palestinians.

Exactly whom am I a bigot towards? It is obvious you are a bigot who hates all things Islamic; you even embrace it!

Devareaux is about as lucid and hard-hitting as a drunk puppy. Of course, to inferior intellects such as yours he must seem a giant. To me he is just another small minded bigot seeking to rationalize his hatred.

I am not your editor, but that does not preclude me for exposing you as the sleazeball you are.

BDE

chooseDoubt said...

BDE,

Reveal a relevant opinion you hold about Islam and back it up with reasons. I'll be more than happy to debate you if you care to actually have a debate. You've had many chances - so either put up or shut up. I'm tired of your prattle.

So here is the offer. You and I will debate. You get to chose exactly what we debate. Send me your comments and I'll post them as an article and my reply. We can then continue the debate in comments. If you can't do that then I'm through with wasting my time with you and you'll not get another word out of me. The email address is my nick at gmail dot com.

Send what you want or go and find a more productive use for your time than wasting mine.

CD:

I have no wish to "debate" you. I come here merely to expose you as the hate filled, small-minded bigot you are. Why would I waste my time debating with someone as obviouslly f'd up as you?

Just ignore me unless your ego won't let you.

Or you can censor me; that will go a long way to illustrating how you embrace western values so long as they don't bother you.

ROTFLMAO!

Exuse me? Are you insane? By posting a "forward" blog such as your own, you are offendsing and insulting every human in the world who belives that perhaps there is a God! Maybe you should think a bit more before you post your blashemous BS all over the interent. It's people like you who should be in Al Queda, your just a wacked out extrememist anti-religious twit with an equally retarded teenage brat who has no concern whatsover for the feelings of the three quarters of the people in the world who have a faith! Yah. Thats right, most people actually have a religion, meaning that you and your athiest family can do whatever you want to try and wipe the world of Christianity, or Judaism, or Buddhism, but unless you really do have down syndrome, you can and will never drown out the vioces of the majority!!

Honestly after reading this webpage, I felt like hurling my dinner onto your Darwin Theorist book. Your a complete moron, just wanted you to know.

Oh and btw, I hope you know that you sound like a Hitler or Sthalin in the making by posting complete BS like this. You are a filthy puke stain on our society, and the whole human race. So before you put-down religious society and culture, perhaps you should think more carefully and take a look in the mirror first, that is if yours havnt all cracked yet.

Anonymous,

Thank you for your kind words, however I think you may have misunderstood a few things – like the entirety of the universe and your existence within and as part of it. It’s sort of difficult to discuss this with you though since you haven’t provided much in the way of comment on your own beliefs in your energetic diatribe. But let’s take a look at what you have said anyway.

“you are offendsing and insulting every human in the world who belives that perhaps there is a God!”

So be it. Whether they are offended by this or not has absolutely no baring on the truth of their beliefs, or complete lack there of.

“Maybe you should think a bit more before you post your blashemous BS all over the interent.”

Maybe everybody should think a bit more but certainly theists should think a lot more and try a bit of education and honest examination of the foundation, coherence, consequence and history of their beliefs prior to concluding that they are certain about the ultimate answer.

“It's people like you who should be in Al Queda, your just a wacked out extrememist anti-religious twit with an equally retarded teenage brat who has no concern whatsover for the feelings of the three quarters of the people in the world who have a faith!”

Let’s see - an absolutely atheistic individual writing regularly against the validity of religions and the violence they cause joining a fundamentalist religiously based terrorist group? That seems unlikely. My son is two years ahead in school and is a member of the national academy for gifted youth (by invitation, not application).

Three quarters of the population of the world may have faith but they have quite a few different ones and all of them are mutually exclusive. What you say there is equally valid against every religious group – they are all saying “everyone else is wrong”. Once again, their emotional attachment to their beliefs is irrelevant to the validity of those beliefs. Their beliefs have consequences and so those beliefs must be scrutinised and assessed for their validity.

“Thats right, most people actually have a religion, meaning that you and your athiest family can do whatever you want to try and wipe the world of Christianity, or Judaism, or Buddhism, but unless you really do have down syndrome, you can and will never drown out the vioces of the majority!!”

I’m not aware of any research showing that Down’s syndrome sufferers are especially gifted in wiping out the worlds religions so I’m not sure why you think it would help. Regardless, this argument works equally as well against all religions – in other words not at all. It doesn’t matter how many people are wrong (incidentally all disagreeing with each other as well) it doesn’t make them right. You can’t assess the truth of a proposition based solely on the number of people that believe it to be true. The flat earth camp died out, as did the man will never fly camp, as did the moon is made of cheese camp, the faeries at the bottom of the garden camp (well almost, I once met someone who genuinely does believe in faeries in her garden), the sun orbiting the earth camp, the earth at the centre of the solar system camp, the cigarettes are good for you camp and plenty of other wide spread claptrap that was firmly contradicted by emerging knowledge despite the vast number of individuals that previously believed. All of the religions will go the same way because they are all contradicted by the evidence and logic.

“Oh and btw, I hope you know that you sound like a Hitler or Sthalin in the making by posting complete BS like this. You are a filthy puke stain on our society, and the whole human race. So before you put-down religious society and culture, perhaps you should think more carefully and take a look in the mirror first, that is if yours havnt all cracked yet.”

Hitler was a Catholic and atheism was not the main drive of Stalin’s transformational ideology. I don’t think I’ve advocated killing millions at anytime and have regularly spoken out against placing baseless beliefs above the welfare and liberty of others.

I won’t return any of your insults. You seem to be offended enough by challenge to your beliefs which is suggestive of your understanding of reality resting upon emotional conclusions as opposed to logical ones. Maybe next time you could try to make an argument against what I’m saying as opposed to simply venting.

Regards,

CD

Funny thing: Thats probably the first time that an adult has taken my opinion seriously; because the anomenous person that was blatently "venting" on your comments board is me: the 15 year old student attending high school who just so happened to stumble across your blog while researching Hitler and the Holocaust...interesting how your webpage turned up from those two keywords...

Oh, and yes I am 15, and I find your response to my comment both highly amusing and yet refreshing; the fact that you said my opinion is based upon emotional conlusions is annoyingly true; I am in fact an estrogen induced teenager with nothing better to do (at the moment) than tear your beliefs apart and insult your personal life to boot.

Oh, and for the record, Adolphs birthday was on the 20th, and since its coming fast and furious, I figured I would alert you so that you'd remember to celebrate this year.

Cheers! And all the best from an angsty teen. (sorry I didn't mention this earlier, but you can certainly derive from my writing technique that I am the 'anonomous' person, can you not?)

Hello,
I enjoyed reading your story very much and wish I had the courage your son has to stand up for my beliefs. I'm afraid however that I would get into as much trouble as your son would for what I tend to oppose seem to be taken as fact and my beliefs are not enough reason to get out of my work. Please don't take this to mean your son should have done which was obviously a ridiculous project. It is just my reasoning for staying out of trouble.
It may or may not surprise you to know that I am a Christian in high school and while your son suffers through a religious class I suffer through our discussions of evolution and teachers ranting about why believing in God is ridiculous. I'm sorry you've had such bad dealings with religion. No one should be forced to pray or be thrown out of church for asking questions. What I don't understand is why making up a religion is promoting Christianity or any religion at all. All it is doing is saying "see here kids whatever you say goes, and lets just make a bunch of rituals to confuse people while were at it!"
My step dad who is one of the people who would be ranting at you on this page would probably have come to the school and yelled at the teacher about how you can't make up a religion and how she is obviously trying to bring children away from God. Then restrict me from doing the project. Anyway what I'm saying is the project is idiotic from any point of view. It should not be used in school. A religious studies class should not be required and the only thing a religious studies class should teach is what religions believe and their influence on the world good and bad.
I will be the first to admit religion can be a bad thing my dad isn't an atheist and he believes in God but he doesn't believe in religion or the Bible and he made sure I know what the Catholics did to the Native Americans and what the protestants did to the Jews and all the other idiotic things religions have done and that go in to religion. But that doesn't make me approve of you comparing religion to slavery, dictatorship, discrimination, or child abuse. Maybe the class is full of propaganda but I think that is as far as you can push it. People may have used religion to promote these things but that is because they are trying to justify the evil things they do. It is not because the religion necessarily promotes these things. It's just that anything can be twisted especially if you take it out of context.
One set of my grandparents are Catholic, one Morman, and one Lutheran. It makes you want to tear your hair out when they all try to have you go to their church and I am use to listening to the arguments against each other.
I'm sure I'd love to listen to your son argue with his teacher. It is always entertaining to see people who are wrong or act like sheep get taken down a notch. She should know better than to use such obviously idiotic and discriminatory arguments and should let things be discussed. I'd like to end with saying I know what I believe. It is not what any of my parents believe but my own thoughts and interpretation of the Bible. Christians are not all like the ones you have had contact with and I would appreciate not being put into the category of the sheep I have to deal with, who will believe anything. I would also like to say there are other historical references that talk about Jesus and what goes on in the Bible besides the Bible or religious doctrine. Specifically they have just found a stone in Israel that confirms Pontius Pilot was indeed there. I look forward to reading your paper on Jesus.

What the heck is he doing in a religious school then? If you're an atheist why would you put him in a place like that or even support a curriculum like that. Unless maybe you're brilliant and you're using him to plant a message in the other kids' minds about asking questions and becoming enlightened to the facts scientists have uncovered... Hmm, pretty smart!

you demonstrate what I call oppositional-defiant-disorder. you are mixing up theology/down-with-jesus etc. with the fact that the class or teacher is controlling in a dull way and not very intellectual. you are mixing up content with quality and you are rebelling against the content instead of rebelling against the lack of quality, whcih can only be addressed by initiative to be in a better environment. I have a strong interest in the whole notion of oppositional students. Let me tell you, it really sucks to work somewhere where people are throwing things at you.
